Which Social Media Sites Strip EXIF Data?
Practically all of them. Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit, and Pinterest each re-encode the images they show, and the copy a stranger can save carries no GPS, no camera model, and no capture date. But not one of them strips anything beforeyour upload lands on their servers. "They strip EXIF" is true and reassuring; it is also not the same promise as "your location was never shared."

The pattern is boring on purpose: every mainstream platform strips EXIF from the image it serves, so the honest comparison is not whether they strip but what that protects you from. The two amber rows are the real exceptions — Reddit and Pinterest both let you point at an image that lives somewhere they do not control, and there the stripping is only as good as the other host.
Why Platforms Strip EXIF
None of them do it as a favor to your privacy, even where it happens to help. The stripping is a side effect of how a platform serves billions of images:
- Re-encoding, not scrubbing. When you upload, the image is re-compressed and often resized into the formats and dimensions the site actually serves. That pipeline rebuilds the file from the pixels up, and the EXIF block — which was never needed to display the photo — simply is not carried across.
- Smaller files, faster pages. Metadata is dead weight for a viewer. Dropping it shaves bytes off every one of the millions of copies the platform sends per day.
- Liability, not altruism. A platform that served your home coordinates to anyone who saved your photo would own that exposure. Stripping the public copy is the cheap way to not be the party that leaked it.
Notice what none of those reasons touch: the file you sent. Your device uploads the original exactly as it sits on disk, GPS and all. Stripping is something the receiving end does afterward, to its own copy. That is why every row in the table above says "Yes" under reaches their servers.
What Metadata Is Retained After Upload
Almost nothing survives inside the public image. The mistake is assuming the image was ever where the identifying information lived. A post carries plenty that EXIF stripping never touches:
- The original file, on their servers. This is the one that matters and the one no metadata tool can see. Your GPS, your timestamp, and your camera model all made the trip. What the platform retains, and for how long, is not something anyone can verify from the outside — be skeptical of pages that claim a precise answer.
- The post timestamp. Public, precise, and tied to your account. For a photo posted as it was taken, the gap between that and the real capture time is minutes.
- Any location you attached yourself. A place tag is a separate feature from photo EXIF, and it is a disclosure you made on purpose — usually more legible to a reader than a coordinate pair would be.
- Captions, alt text, and comments. If you wrote where the photo was taken, you published where the photo was taken. The platform did not remove that.
- The pixels themselves. A street sign, a house number, a storefront, a ridgeline. No amount of metadata stripping touches the image content, and this is how photos actually get geolocated in practice.

How to Verify Your Photo Privacy
You do not have to trust any of this. Every claim on this page is testable with one photo and accounts you already have.
- Establish a baseline. Pick a photo you know has GPS in it and open it in our EXIF viewer. Confirm the coordinates land on the map. That is what you are testing against.
- Post it, then save it back. Upload the photo to the platform — to a private account, or delete the post right after — then download the published image and run it through the viewer again. On every platform in the table, the GPS, camera model, and capture date are gone.
- Rule out the small-preview objection.On X, copy the image address and change the URL's
name=parameter toname=origto fetch the largest render. It still has no EXIF — the metadata is not hiding in a higher-quality copy. - Check the two amber rows differently. For a Reddit post or Pinterest Pin, follow the link off the platform to wherever the image is actually hosted, and run that file through the viewer. If the source host did not strip it, the original metadata is sitting there in the open.

The One Habit That Beats the Whole Table
Memorizing which platform strips what is a losing game. Pipelines change without announcement, there is more than one way to get a file onto a site, and the two exceptions above prove the behavior is not uniform even today. The fix that survives all of it is upstream of every app:
