Does iMessage Remove EXIF Data?

The short answer

No — iMessage does not strip EXIF data. A photo sent in a blue bubble travels as an attachment, and the file that lands on the other phone still carries its GPS coordinates, camera make and model, and the exact time the shutter fired. iMessage is a delivery service, not a privacy filter.

The green-bubble SMS/MMS path is the exception: your carrier re-compresses the picture to fit a size limit and the metadata generally does not survive that. But it is a side effect of compression, not a privacy feature, and you cannot tell from the send screen which path your photo took — so never rely on the colour of the bubble.

Read the right-hand column carefully: every entry is something you have to do, except the last one, which is something a carrier happens to do on your behalf. Nothing in iMessage itself removes a single field. The clean version of this table is the one where you strip the file first — then the left column is empty and there is nothing left to reason about.

What Happens to EXIF When You Send via iMessage vs. SMS

Blue bubble (iMessage): EXIF goes with it. iMessage moves your photo as a file over Apple's own service. There is no upload-and-republish step of the kind Instagram or Facebook run, so there is nothing that rebuilds the image without its EXIF block. The recipient can save the picture and read your coordinates out of it.

Green bubble (SMS/MMS): usually re-compressed, usually lost. When the other person is not on iMessage, the photo falls back to your carrier's MMS gateway, which downscales it aggressively to fit a size limit measured in low hundreds of kilobytes. That re-encode typically leaves the EXIF behind — but the exact behaviour is your carrier's, not Apple's, and it is not something you can check from the send screen.

RCS does not change the answer for you. Newer iPhones can send to Android over RCS instead of MMS, which allows much larger files and far less brutal compression. Whether any given RCS message preserves EXIF depends on the carrier and the receiving app, so treat it the same way you should treat everything else here: unknown until you verify.

Low Quality Image Mode is a data setting. Turning it on in Settings makes Messages send smaller, re-encoded images. It exists to save bandwidth, not to protect you, and it is not a metadata switch — do not treat it as one.

Your own copy is untouched either way. Sending a photo through Messages never edits the file in your camera roll. The full EXIF is still there for the next place you share it.

The practical upshot: the safest-feeling channel — a private message to one person you trust — is the one that hands over the most data. Public platforms strip EXIF because they re-publish your image at scale. A messenger that just delivers your file has no reason to.

How to Verify Whether iMessage Stripped Your EXIF Data

Do not take anyone's word for it — including ours. Bubble colour, carrier, iOS version and how you attached the photo all change the answer, so the only reliable check is the one you run on your own setup. It takes about a minute, and the result holds for every photo you send the same way afterwards.

  1. Send the photo to yourself. Use a second device or a group with only you in it, and attach the picture exactly the way you normally would — from the photo drawer inside Messages if that is your habit. Attaching it a different way tests a different thing.
  2. Note the bubble colour. Blue is iMessage; green is SMS/MMS through your carrier. You are about to find out what that difference costs you.
  3. Save the received copy. Tap and hold the image in the conversation, then Save — this is the file your recipient would have, not your camera-roll original.
  4. Open the checker. On the same phone or on a computer, use our free EXIF checker and drop the saved copy in. It reads the file locally in your browser, so a photo with your real home coordinates in it is never uploaded anywhere.
  5. Look for the GPS section. If latitude and longitude are listed, nothing was stripped and your recipient can put your photo on a map. If the GPS section is absent, something along the path dropped it.
  6. Now check the original too. Run the camera-roll version through the same checker and compare. Fields present in the original but missing from the received copy are exactly what your phone, your settings and your carrier removed — everything else went through.

Expect the blue-bubble copy to come back looking identical to the original. That is the normal, correct result, and it is the reason this page exists. A green-bubble copy will usually come back with the EXIF gone and the image noticeably smaller — but that is your carrier's compression doing it, so re-test if you switch networks or the recipient switches phones.

How to Send an iMessage Photo Without Location Data

iOS can drop the GPS tags from a shared copy, but only if you share from the Photos app. Open the photo in Photos, tap the share button, then tap Options at the top of the sheet and switch Location off. Pick Messages and send. The copy that leaves your phone has no coordinates in it.

The catch is that this control does not exist in the photo drawer inside the Messages app. If you attach a picture from within a conversation — the usual way anyone does it — you never see the Options screen, and the location goes along for the ride. It is also per-share: turning it off once does not make it stick.

Note what the toggle is called. It removes the location, and only the location — the camera model, the lens, the exposure settings and the capture time all still travel with the photo. If you want those gone as well, you are back to stripping the file, and strip metadata before sharing is the checklist for doing it once, for every channel.

Read the first three rows and the last two together. Instagram strips the most and still knows the most, because you handed it your original file on the way in — that is the point of does Instagram remove EXIF data. iMessage strips the least and knows nothing, because the attachment is encrypted in transit. "Strips EXIF" and "protects your privacy" are not the same claim, and the three columns above disagree about which is which.

The Reliable Fix: Strip It Before You Attach

Every rule on this page has an exception, and the exceptions move. Bubble colour depends on whether your recipient's phone is online. MMS behaviour depends on a carrier. The Location toggle depends on which app you opened the share sheet from, and resets every time. That is a lot of conditions to keep straight for something you do without thinking.
